Frostwind viragos are embodiments of the unforgiving and indiscriminately cruel heart of deep winter. The frostwind virago savage progression depicted here extends from level 1-16. This is contrary to the typical frostwind virago, which has 30 HD. Many of these HD would be considered “dead levels” if put into a savage progression, and a typical frostwind virago's high CR is attributed to their high save DCs. Using this variant, a player (or DM) can choose to use the frostwind virago as a carrier race to gestalt with, giving the frostwind virago the elite ability array, allowing it to more closely match it's standard DCs while also giving the frostwind virago race a wider variety in terms of gestalt. As per the gestalt rules, a fully gestalted 16HD frostwind virago would be an ECL19 character, or CR19 enemy.
Update 1: I have added the snowsight ability to the class.
Update 2: Because a 30HD virago gains a total of 11 feats from HD, but a 16HD virago would only gain 6, I have decided to add in some of the “typical” virago feats as bonus feats. The virago can pick between either Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, and Whirlwind Attack, or Combat Expertise, Improved Disarm, Iron Will and Improved Toughness. All frostwind viragos also gain Flyby Attack as a bonus feat.

  • Starting Ability Score Adjustments: +2 Dex, +2 Cha. Frostwind viragos embody the grace and beauty of winter, but also it's unforgiving and swift death.
  • Speed: Frostwind virago have a land speed of 30ft and a swim speed of 20ft. As a frostwind virago gains levels, it eventually gains the ability to fly as well.
  • Low-Light Vision: As fey, frostwind virago have low-light vision.
  • Skills: A frostwind virago has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. She can choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. She can use the run action when swimming, provided she swims in a straight line.
  • Automatic Languages: Auran, Common, Elven, Sylvan
  • Favoured Class: Frostwind Virago. Multiclass frostwind virago tend to be druids, bards or beguilers.

The frostwind virago 's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Bluff (Cha), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Hide (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Survival (Wis), Swim (Str).
Skill points per level: 6 + Int modifier.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Frostwind virago are proficient with all simple weapons, but not with any armor or shields.

Path of the Virago: At 1st level a frostwind virago must chose between two paths of combat, the way of the tempest, or the way of the glacier. At 1st level, tempest viragos gain Dodge as a bonus feat, while glacier viragos gain Combat Expertise. At 4th level tempest viragos gain Mobility, while glacier viragos gain Improved Disarm. At 10th level tempest viragos gain Spring Attack, while glacier viragos gain Iron Will. Finally, at 14th level tempest viragos gain whirlwind attack, while glacier viragos gain Improved Toughness.

Deflection (Su): Beginning at 2nd level, a frostwind virago's beauty provides her a deflection bonus to her AC equal to half her level (maximum +8).

Frostbite Touch (Su): A frostwind virago's touch can disrupt matter and freeze it. At 1st level, the frostwind virago gains 2 touch attacks that deal 1d4 points of damage plus 1d4 points of cold damage. At 6th level both damage die increase to 1d6. At 10th level, both damage die once again increase to 1d8, and each damage roll gains a damage bonus equal to her charisma modifier. At 14th level the damage dice increase again to 2d6. Finally, at 16th level the frostwind virago's frostbite touch gains her charisma modifier to each damage dice, instead of to each damage roll.

Snowsight (Ex): A frostwind virago can see clearly through snowfall as the snowsight spell out to 30ft. At level 3 the range increases to 60 ft. and at 5th it increases again to 120ft. At 7th level the frostwind virago can can see through snowfall out to the limits of her vision.

Icy Vortex (Su): At 2nd level a frostwind virago can produce a whirling mass of ice shards that lasts 1 round in a 5 ft radius around herself. Creatures in the area take 1d6 points of piercing damage plus 1d6 points of cold damage (Reflex half). This ability can be used a number of times per day equal to 3 + half her level. At 6th level the radius increases to 10 ft and the damage increases to 2d6 piercing and 2d6 cold. At 9th level the radius increases to 20 ft and the damage increases to 3d6 piercing and 3d6 cold. At 12th level the radius increases to 30 ft and the damage increases to 4d6 piercing and 4d6 cold. At 15th level the frostwind virago can use this ability at will. The save DC is equal to 10 + half the frostwind virago's character level + her charisma modifier.

Spell Resistance (Su): At 3rd level a frostwind virago gains spell resistance equal to 9 plus her level.

Flight (Su): The frostwind virago gains a fly speed as indicated on the table above.

Mind Freeze Aura (Su): At 5th level the frostwind virago gains the ability to project a disrupting aura around them. Each round at the end of the frostwind virago's turn, creatures within 10ft must succeed on a Will save or become shaken for 1 round. At 9th level, the range increases to 20ft, and creatures that fail their save by 5 or more are also dazed for 1 round. At 13th level the range increases to 30ft and creatures that fail their save by 10 or more are also stunned for 1 round. The save DC is equal to 10 + half the frostwind virago's character level + her charisma modifier. The frostwind virago can suppress this ability as a free action. Other frostwind viragos are immune to this aura.

Flyby Attack: At 6th level the frostwind virago gains Flyby Attack as a bonus feat.

Captivating Call (Su): At 7th level the frostwind virago can use a captivating call. Once per day, when a frostwind virago speaks and wills it to be so, all creatures (other than frostwind viragos) within a 100 ft radius spread must succeed on a Will save or become captivated. This is a language-based, sonic mind-affecting ability. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by that same frostwind virago’s call for 24 hours. The save DC is equal to 10 + half the frostwind virago's character level + her charisma modifier.
A captivated victim walks toward the frostwind virago, taking the most direct route available. If the path leads into a dangerous area, that opponent receives a second saving throw. Captivated foes can take no actions other than to avoid attack. A captivated victim within 5 feet of a frostwind virago stands there and offers no resistance to the fey’s attacks. The effect continues for as long as the frostwind virago speaks and for 1d4 rounds thereafter. A bard’s countersong ability allows a captivated victim to attempt a new Will save.
At 11th level the frostwind virago can use this ability 3/day, and the radius increases to 200ft. At 16th level the frostwind virago can use this ability at will, and the radius increases to 300ft.
